The journey to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games officially kicks off this August as national teams across five continents begin their quest for glory. These continental championships mark the first crucial step in the qualification process for both the LA28 Olympics and the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.
Continental Championships: A Gateway to LA28
A direct ticket to the LA28 Olympics is on the line, with one team from each of the five continental championships earning an automatic spot for both the men’s and women’s events. This means five coveted Olympic berths will be decided through these prestigious tournaments.
Beyond the Olympic dream, these championships also play a significant role in shaping the field for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup. The top three eligible teams from each continental competition will secure their place, filling 15 of the 32 available spots in both the men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments. Furthermore, all matches will contribute valuable points to the FIVB World Ranking, which will be instrumental in determining the remaining Olympic qualification places.
Women’s Continental Showdowns Begin
The women’s continental action gets underway on August 21st, with tournaments commencing in Europe, Asia, and the NORCECA region. Africa’s championship follows two days later, and the South American tournament will run from September 8th to 13th.
In Europe, the women’s competition will span Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Czechia, and Sweden, culminating in Istanbul. Powerhouses like Italy, Türkiye, Serbia, Poland, and the Netherlands are expected to contend for the top spots. China’s Tianjin will host the Asian championship, featuring strong teams such as China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Santo Domingo is set to host the NORCECA tournament, while Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro will be the venues for the African and South American championships, respectively.
Men’s Race to LA28 Heats Up in September
The men’s continental championship schedule kicks off in September. The Asian championship in Fukuoka, Japan, from September 4th to 13th, will be the first to begin, with Japan, Iran, China, Qatar, and Korea among the anticipated participants.
Africa’s men’s championship is scheduled for Kinshasa from September 7th to 21st. Europe’s tournament begins on September 9th and concludes on September 26th, with matches spread across Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and Romania, and the final phase hosted in Milan. Italy, Poland, France, Slovenia, and Türkiye are among the top European contenders.
The NORCECA men’s championship will take place in Moncton from September 11th to 19th, immediately followed by the South American tournament in Rio de Janeiro from September 15th to 20th.
Host Nation USA and Regional Dynamics
While the United States has already secured an Olympic quota place as the host nation for LA28, their national teams will still participate in the NORCECA championships. For the NORCECA men’s event, the four highest-finishing teams excluding the USA will advance to a playoff phase, with the winner claiming the region’s sole Olympic qualification spot. Similarly, the women’s tournament will see a competitive battle for the available berth.
Key contenders in the NORCECA region include Canada, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic for the men, and the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Puerto Rico for the women, all aiming to challenge the USA’s presence and secure qualification. In South America, Brazil and Argentina are expected to lead the charge in the men’s competition, while Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru will be strong contenders in the women’s event. Africa’s fields boast teams like Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya for the men, and Kenya, Egypt, and Cameroon for the women.
