Slovenia has secured their spot in the Volleyball Nations League semifinals after a nail-biting, straight-set victory over a tenacious Turkiye side in their VNL quarterfinal clash. The thrilling encounter in Ningbo, China, saw Slovenia emerge victorious, extending their VNL Finals appearance streak.
Slovenia’s Hard-Fought Victory in Ningbo
In a match that stretched for over two hours, Slovenia ultimately triumphed 3-0 (25-21, 35-33, 39-37). This marks Slovenia’s third consecutive and fourth overall appearance in the VNL semifinals. Turkiye, competing in the Finals for the first time, displayed incredible resilience, pushing Slovenia to the absolute limit in every set.
Key Moments and Star Performances
The first set saw Turkiye take an early lead, but a surge of unforced errors allowed Slovenia to regain control. Young opposite Nik Mujanovic sealed the first set for Slovenia with a decisive hit.
The second set was a tense affair, with both outside hitter Rok Mozic for Slovenia and opposite Adis Lagumdzija for Turkiye engaging in a fierce scoring duel. Slovenia had multiple opportunities to close out the set, but Turkiye’s strong blocking kept them in contention. Ultimately, an attack error by Turkiye gave Slovenia a hard-earned 35-33 win.
In the third set, Turkiye battled back from a five-point deficit, with substitute outside hitter Gokcen Yuksel making a significant impact. The set went into another extended overtime period, with both teams exchanging blows. Slovenia finally converted their fourth match point, with Mujanovic sealing the win with a massive block at 39-37.

Unforced errors proved to be a critical factor, with Turkiye committing 28 compared to Slovenia’s 18. Slovenia held a slight edge in attack efficiency, outscoring Turkiye 58-56 in successful spikes.

Rok Mozic shared his thoughts after the intense match: “It was like a five-set match. I said to the physical coach: ‘What is this – we are not even prepared for three sets?’ I was tired already in the third set. Turkiye didn’t give up. They played really, really well and we suffered a bit, but I am happy, because we did it! We won and this is the most important thing.”
Adis Lagumdzija reflected on the missed opportunities: “We did an amazing job from the first game in Canada until now, but we just finished this game and I am quite sad, because it could have gone both ways, but we made those silly mistakes, when we couldn’t put the ball down, when we had it. That’s what counted today. I hope we learn from our mistakes and bring back better volleyball the next time we meet – in Europe in two months.”

Slovenia now eagerly awaits the winner of the quarterfinal between Poland and Ukraine to determine their semifinal opponent. Turkiye, despite their valiant effort, exits the competition having made history by reaching the VNL Finals for the first time.
