Slovenia – Serving Up Victory: Slovenia’s Men’s Volleyball Team Sets the Bar High

Slovenian men’s national team coach Gheorghe Cretu announced a list of 23 players, whom he is planning to rely on for the upcoming season.

Setters: Dejan Vincic, Gregor Pernus, Gregor Ropret, Uros Planinsic

Opposites: Jaka Sesek, Nik Mujanovic, Toncek Stern

Outside hitters: Crtomir Bosnjak, Klemen Cebulj, Matej Kok, Rok Bracko, Rok Mozic, Tine Urnaut, Ziga Stern

A look back in the past:

Let’s dive into the thrilling journey of the Slovenia men’s national volleyball team over the past decade. From the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) to the World Championships, and even the Olympics, this team has shown us what determination and grit truly mean.

The Slovenian team, known for its prowess in international volleyball competitions, has been consistently raising the bar. With a record of being the runner-up in the European Volleyball Championship thrice in 2015, 2019, and 2021, Slovenia has been a force to be reckoned with. 

In 2019 Slovenia won the Challenger cup, thus resulting in qualifying for VNL. During the first year, they made a furor reaching the semi finals. In 2022 they also showed that they were made for success finishing 10th after a close battle with Argentina, Serbia and the Netherlands for the final qualifying spot for Bologna. 

Currently sitting at the 9th spot in the world rankings the focus for the team is their first ever Olympic qualification. 

Players to look out for:

Toncek Stern, the Slovenian dynamo. Known for his exceptional gameplay, Stern had a successful stint with the Turkish team Halkbank until 2020. His performance in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) was noteworthy, earning him the title of top scorer in 2021. Stern’s powerful smashes and unparalleled skill make him one to watch. Here’s to many more thrilling games! 

Rok Možič, a young Slovenian sensation. Born into a volleyball legacy, Rok has proved his mettle right from his youth championships. He made a remarkable debut with the Slovenia national team in 2020  and hasn’t looked back since. His performance at the 2021 VNL and EuroVolley was astounding . Presently, Rok shines as an outside hitter for Verona Volley in Italy, leading them to several victories. Rok Možič, folks – remember the name!

Meet Jan Kozamernik, a prodigious talent in the realm of volleyball. Born on December 24, 1995, in Slovenia’s capital, he found his calling in volleyball after experimenting with various sports. His exceptional skills as a middle blocker have led him to outstanding achievements, playing for renowned clubs like Asseco Resovia in Poland. A stalwart of the Slovenian national team, he has thrice led them to the runner-up spot in the European Volleyball Championship in 2015, 2019, and 2021. Off-court, Jan boasts a BSc in Electrical Engineering, showcasing his versatility. Jan Kozamernik, an electrifying presence both on and off the court!
