The quarterfinals begin on Wednesday, July 22, with the remaining two matches taking place the following day. The intensity builds on Saturday with the semifinals, leading up to the medal matches on Sunday.

Opening Day Showdowns: Italy vs. Netherlands and Brazil vs. Japan

The action kicks off on Wednesday at 16:00 local time (08:00 UTC) with a highly anticipated clash between two European powerhouses: Italy and the Netherlands.

Italy, the reigning two-time VNL champions, Olympic gold medalists, and current world number one, enters the match as the clear favorite. With an impressive 10-2 record in the Preliminary Phase, they are aiming for their fourth VNL title. They finished just one point behind the top-ranked USA in the standings.

For the Netherlands, this marks a historic first appearance in the VNL Finals. They secured their spot by finishing seventh in the Preliminary Phase with a 7-5 record, notably outperforming established teams like Poland and the host nation, China. The Dutch are currently ranked eighth globally.

Historically, Italy has dominated the head-to-head against the Netherlands, winning 15 out of 25 major encounters. Italy has won the last three meetings, including matches in the Paris 2024 Olympics and the previous two VNL seasons. The Netherlands’ last victory over Italy was at the 2023 European Championship.

The second quarterfinal on Wednesday features a compelling matchup between Brazil and Japan, starting at 19:30 (11:30).

Brazil has a commanding lead in their historical encounters with Japan, having won 69 of their 85 meetings. Brazil also won their recent VNL clash this year, though Japan’s last victory dates back to a thrilling five-set semifinal in VNL 2024.

Thursday’s Quarterfinals: Turkiye vs. Canada and USA vs. China

Thursday’s action begins at 16:00 (08:00) with Turkiye facing Canada.

Turkiye, the 2023 VNL champions, brings a strong pedigree to Macao, including a World Championship silver and Olympic semifinal appearance. They qualified as the fourth-placed team with a 9-3 record.

Canada makes their VNL Finals debut after a remarkable fifth-place finish in the Preliminary Phase, led by Kiera Van Ryk, the phase’s top scorer. They are currently ranked 11th.

Turkiye has dominated recent matchups, winning the last four encounters in straight sets. Canada’s sole victory against Turkiye in the last 15 years occurred in VNL 2022.

The final quarterfinal match is scheduled for 19:30 (11:30) on Thursday, pitting Preliminary Phase leaders USA against host nation China.

The USA topped the Preliminary Phase standings with a 10-2 record, aiming for their first VNL title since 2021 and their fourth overall. They secured silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics and are ranked third globally.

China automatically qualified as hosts, finishing the Preliminary Phase in ninth place. They have earned three VNL medals, including a silver in 2023, and are currently seventh in the world rankings.

In their extensive history, China has won 45 of 80 encounters against the USA, including the last four matches, three of which went to five sets. The USA’s last win over China was in VNL 2021.
