In an outstanding performance at the Volleyball Nations League 2023, Team Canada claimed a 3-0 victory over Team Bulgaria. The Canadian side demonstrated exceptional skills, sweeping the match with set scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-15, in a display of top-notch teamwork and strategy.
Canada dominated the match right from the start, boasting 38 successful attacks, compared to Bulgaria’s 27. Leading the offensive charge for the Canadian side were outside hitters Kiera Van Ryk and Hilary Howe, who together contributed a whopping 21 attack points.
Van Ryk, the player of the match, notched up 15 points, including 12 in attack , 2 blocks, and 1 serve point, exhibiting a well-rounded game. Howe followed closely behind with 13, 9 attack points, 3 block points, 1 serve point,
Team Canada’s middle blockers also had a significant impact on the match. White Jazmine Ruth and Emily Maglio contributed a combined 5 block points, bolstering Canada’s defensive stats to a total of 13 blocks for the match. Their contribution significantly helped slow down Bulgaria’s offensive momentum.
The Canadian side was equally impressive in their backcourt game, executing a total of 56 digs. The team captain, Alexa Gray, played an essential role in this regard, contributing 11 ABS, including 9 attack points and 2 serve points, leading the team in serves and digs.
In contrast, Bulgaria struggled to find their rhythm in the game. Their top performer was outside hitter Yordanova Maria, who managed 9 points, with all of them coming from attacks. Middle blocker Todorova Mira was another significant contributor with 4, including 2 block points.
Despite Bulgaria’s tenacious 52 digs and 3 serve aces, the gap in the teams’ performances was clear, both in offense and defense. The team will undoubtedly use this experience to refine their tactics and come back stronger in their upcoming games.
