Germany Survives Tests, Romania Advances in EuroVolley

Germany narrowly avoided an upset, surviving a stern challenge from Switzerland to remain unbeaten in Pool D, while Romania clinched a coveted knockout-stage spot with a commanding performance against Türkiye.

Germany Pushed by Determined Switzerland

In a hard-fought encounter, Germany extended their perfect record at the CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men to four matches, but it was far from a straightforward affair. Switzerland proved to be a resilient opponent, pushing the favored German squad to four sets before ultimately falling 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21).

Germany initially seemed to be in cruise control, securing the first two sets with efficient attacking and strong net play. Tobias Brand was a standout performer for the German side, leading all scorers with an impressive 25 points. Germany also showcased their defensive prowess with 11 blocks, including three from Tobias Krick.

However, Switzerland, under the guidance of Juan Manuel Serramalera, refused to back down. They rallied impressively in the third set, capitalizing on a dip in Germany’s intensity to claim it 25-22. This marked their first set won against a top-tier opponent in the pool.

Alexander Lengweiler of Switzerland expressed the team’s motivation after seeing other teams challenge the top contenders. “We saw Romania take Germany to 3-2, and our expectations were higher against Romania and Türkiye, and we didn’t perform,” he stated. “So it was like, if we want to have a chance, we’ve got to win this.”

That fighting spirit carried into the fourth set. Though Germany established an early lead, Switzerland battled back, keeping the possibility of a fifth-set thriller alive. “We were able to be on their heels, and then in the third set they relaxed a little bit, and we took the advantage and didn’t lose it,” Lengweiler explained. “In the fourth, they started well, but we came back, so I really felt, ‘Man, we’re going to get this.’ But it didn’t happen. It was a good fight.”

Ultimately, Germany regrouped to seal the victory in the fourth set, ending the match after 107 minutes. The statistics highlighted Switzerland’s increased competitiveness in the latter stages, closing the gap in attacking efficiency and blocking.

Romania Secures Knockout Berth in Style

Meanwhile, the host nation Romania delivered a memorable performance for their passionate home crowd, defeating Türkiye 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18) to secure their place in the knockout stage.

Building on the momentum from their near-upset of Germany the previous day, Romania controlled the opening two sets. While Türkiye managed to take the third, the Romanian squad regained their focus to close out the match in front of 3,875 spectators at BTarena.

Key to Romania’s success was their potent serving, which disrupted Türkiye’s offensive rhythm, coupled with a strong 58% attacking efficiency. Alexandru Rață was the top scorer for Romania with 22 points, supported by Cristian-Daniel Chițigoi’s 16 points.

Rață reflected on the team’s growing confidence. “Everything began after the win against Switzerland. We started to play better against Germany and played stronger Volleyball, and that gave us the confidence and the form we needed to play so well against Türkiye,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of their serving. “We always try to serve as well as possible, but today all my teammates served really well, and that made the difference.”

Key Takeaways from Pool D Action

The results in Pool D highlight the competitive nature of the tournament. Germany’s ability to win even when not at their absolute best, a trait of strong championship teams, was on full display. Their resilience after being pushed by Romania and then again by Switzerland demonstrates their mental fortitude.

Romania’s progression to the knockout stage is a significant achievement, fueled by home support and a clear improvement in their play throughout the competition. Their victory over Türkiye, a strong European side, signals their readiness for the next phase.

For Switzerland, while the desired victory didn’t materialize, their performance against Germany showed considerable improvement and a fighting spirit that bodes well for their future matches.
