Latvia delivered a stunning performance to spoil Romania’s highly anticipated home opener at the CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory in Cluj-Napoca.
Latvia Holds Nerve in Nail-Biting Opener
The opening match of Pool D saw Latvia edge out the hosts Romania with set scores of 26-24, 18-25, 25-21, and 26-24. This encounter was a far cry from their previous meeting in the European League earlier in the summer, where Latvia had claimed a straight-set win. This time, Romania, fueled by a passionate home crowd and the emotion of a European Championship debut on their own soil, presented a significantly tougher challenge.
A Tense Battle for Dominance
The first set was a tense affair, with Romania initially taking a 21-19 lead. However, Latvia showcased remarkable composure under pressure, erasing the deficit and ultimately clinching the set 26-24. Romania responded emphatically in the second set, their attack finding its rhythm and the home crowd roaring them on. They dominated the set 25-18, leveling the match with a display of power and precision, including four blocks and 14 successful attacks.
Latvia regrouped effectively in the third set. After trailing 8-7, they gradually shifted the momentum, building a 16-13 advantage and maintaining their lead to secure the set 25-21. The fourth set mirrored the drama of the opener. Latvia held a 16-13 lead, but Romania mounted a strong comeback, surging ahead to 21-19. Yet, Latvia proved more clinical in the crucial moments, staying patient and closing out another tight set 26-24 to seal the victory.
Key Performances and Team Effort
Kristaps Šmits was the leading scorer for Latvia with 14 points, supported by 12 points from Jānis Eduards Medenis and 10 from Gustavs Freimanis. Latvia’s strong blocking game, with 13 successful blocks and six aces, proved pivotal. Romania’s attacking prowess was evident, with Alexandru Rață topping the match scoring with 21 points, and Cristian-Daniel Chițigoi adding 17.
“Of course, home advantage is always important and their fans were helping them. They also had a different roster compared with the European League, so they brought more firepower and we had to adapt to that.”
Latvian opposite Renārs Pauls Jansons highlighted the importance of adapting to Romania’s changed lineup and the impact of the home crowd. He emphasized Latvia’s collective approach, stating, “We went into the match with all our emotions. We left our ego at the hotel and just played as a team. We tried to do what we had been doing in practice, and this is the result.”
Looking Ahead After a Disappointing Start
Despite the disappointment, Romania’s Alexandru Rață acknowledged the team’s effort and the significance of the occasion. “This game had different emotions because it is the European Championship and it is important,” he said. “I think everybody gave everything they had and their maximum for our Volleyball. Of course I am very sad, but we have to move past this moment very quickly because more matches are coming and we have to focus on them.” Rață also pointed to consistency as an area for improvement, noting, “At this level, we cannot afford so many ups and downs if we want to win.”
Adrian Aciobăniței expressed satisfaction with the team’s improved performance compared to earlier in the summer, despite the loss. He suggested that the emotions of playing a home European Championship after a long wait may have impacted the team. His message to his teammates was clear: “It doesn’t matter how difficult the situation feels today. We need to stay positive. Our job is to come back every day, give our best and take the opportunities that come in the next matches.”
Latvia’s victory sets a positive tone for their EuroVolley campaign, while Romania faces the challenge of regrouping and finding consistency as they look to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
