Cuba and the Dominican Republic have punched their tickets to the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup, becoming the first teams from the NORCECA region to earn a spot in the prestigious global tournament.
NORCECA Championship Semifinalists Advance
The NORCECA Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship in Santo Domingo has served as the crucial qualifying event. With the semifinals now underway, both Cuba and the host Dominican Republic have secured their places in the top four of the continental championship. This achievement guarantees them one of the coveted qualification berths for the 2027 World Cup.
They will join host nations Canada and the United States, along with reigning champions Italy, in the expanded lineup for next year’s premier international volleyball event. The Dominican Republic and Cuba‘s progression means they have successfully navigated the path to the World Cup, avoiding the need to play for the final continental ticket.
Race for the Final World Cup Spot Heats Up
While two tickets are already claimed, a third NORCECA spot for the 2027 World Cup remains up for grabs. This final continental berth will be decided in the fifth-place match on Wednesday. Four other nations are still in contention for this last chance to qualify.
The battle for fifth place will feature exciting matchups on Tuesday. Trinidad & Tobago will face off against Puerto Rico, while Costa Rica is set to play Mexico. The winners of these two crucial matches will then compete in the final playoff on Wednesday, with the victor earning the last available ticket to the World Cup.
Dominican Republic and Cuba’s Path to Qualification
The Dominican Republic demonstrated strong form throughout the pool stage, winning all three of their matches in Pool B. They secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico, with key players like B. Martinez scoring 24 points and J. Martinez adding 21, to finish atop their pool. This ensured their direct passage to the semifinals and, critically, their World Cup qualification.
Cuba also showcased their strength, advancing to the semifinals after a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over Mexico in their quarterfinal match. Their consistent performance throughout the tournament has paid off with a World Cup berth.
In a thrilling Pool A finale, Canada narrowly defeated the United States in a five-set thriller (22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13) to claim the top spot undefeated. The USA, finishing second in the pool, advanced to face Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals, which they won decisively 3-0.
The semifinals of the NORCECA Championship are set to feature intense competition as teams vie not only for continental pride but also for a chance to compete on the world stage.
