Defending champions Italy have stormed into the semifinals of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) after a commanding 3-0 victory over the Netherlands in their quarterfinal clash. The Italians showcased their prowess, securing the first available semifinal spot with a swift and decisive performance.
Dominant Performance Secures Speedy Win
Italy, currently ranked number one in the FIVB World Rankings, left no room for doubt in their quarterfinal match held in Macao. They dismantled the Dutch challenge in just 70 minutes, with set scores of 25-21, 25-16, and 25-16. This victory keeps their hopes alive to defend the VNL title they clinched last year, marking their second consecutive and third overall championship win.
From the outset, Italy established control, building a significant five-point lead in the opening set. Although the Netherlands managed to narrow the gap, a powerful serving run by middle blocker and captain Anna Danesi, featuring five consecutive points, re-established Italy’s dominance. Stella Nervini, the young outside hitter, sealed the first set with a decisive spike.
The second set saw Italy surge ahead with an early 7-1 run, maintaining their momentum throughout. A clever tip from Danesi closed out the set at 25-16. In the third set, the Netherlands briefly took a 3-1 lead, but the Italian champions responded with four straight points to regain control and never look back, ultimately winning the set 25-16 to complete the sweep.
Antropova Leads the Charge with Stellar Performance
Italy’s victory was a collective effort, but opposite hitter Ekaterina Antropova was the standout performer. She led all scorers with an impressive 15 points, contributing significantly with three aces and three crucial kill blocks. Outside hitter Myriam Sylla and middle blocker Sarah Fahr also reached double digits, adding 11 and 10 points respectively.
The statistics highlighted Italy’s superiority across the board. They outmatched the Netherlands in kill blocks (10-3), aces (7-2), and spike kills (42-38), while committing fewer unforced errors (10-16).
“We knew that the first match was a little bit about breaking ice,” Antropova shared after the game. “We needed to get some of our rhythm back, and we are really happy that we could make a lot of subs and everyone could feel the court. And we are just excited to continue our journey…”
Netherlands Reflects on Reaching Finals Despite Disappointment
For the Netherlands, Elles Dambrink was their primary offensive threat, scoring 13 points, including one ace and one block. Despite the quarterfinal exit, Dambrink expressed pride in her team’s achievement of reaching the Finals.
“We reached the Finals and we can be really proud of that already,” said Dambrink. “But once you are here, you really want to go on. So, right now, it’s a disappointment, but I think we can also be proud.”
Looking Ahead to the Semifinals
Italy now eagerly awaits the winner of the second quarterfinal match between Brazil and Japan to determine their semifinal opponent. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, where Italy will aim to continue their dominant run towards another VNL title.
