Japan has stormed into the Volleyball Nations League 2026 semifinals, overcoming a tough challenge from host nation China in a dramatic four-set quarterfinal clash.

Japan’s Comeback Victory in Ningbo

In front of a passionate crowd of nearly 6,000 spectators in Ningbo Beilun, the Japanese squad showed incredible resilience. After dropping the opening set, they rallied to win 3-1, securing their third-ever appearance in the VNL semifinals.

Key Moments in a Tight Match

China came out strong, taking the first set 25-23 by building an early advantage and fending off a late surge from Japan. However, Japan responded emphatically in the second set. Trailing by three points, they fought back, with Yuji Nishida delivering the decisive blow to clinch another 25-23 set.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third set, as Japan dominated their opponents with a commanding 25-16 victory. The fourth set proved to be a nail-biter, with China pushing Japan to the brink and leveling the score at 23-23. Ultimately, Shoma Tomita sealed the match for Japan with a powerful service ace.

Standout Performances on Court

Ran Takahashi was the star of the match, leading all scorers with an impressive 21 points. His contribution included two crucial aces and two blocks. Yuji Nishida and Larry Ik Evbade-Dan were also key offensive threats, each contributing 13 points. Shoma Tomita rounded out the strong offensive effort with 10 points, including the match-winning ace.

For China, Wang Bin was their top scorer, putting up 19 points in a valiant effort.
