Six powerhouse nations have punched their tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games men’s volleyball tournament, marking the first wave of qualified teams. Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Tunisia, Poland, and hosts USA are all officially heading to LA!
Early LA 2028 Olympic Berths Secured
With the continental qualifying events now concluded, five of the twelve coveted spots for the LA 2028 men’s volleyball competition have been filled. Alongside the host nation, the United States, the formidable teams of Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Tunisia, and Poland have earned their early qualification.
Host Nation and Established Powers Lead the Pack
The United States, as the host nation, automatically secures a place in the Los Angeles 2028 Games. This marks their third time hosting Olympic volleyball events, having previously done so in 1984 and 1996. The American men will be making their 14th Olympic appearance overall and 12th consecutive, arriving as the bronze medalists from Paris 2024. Currently ranked fourth in the FIVB World Rankings, USA boasts a strong Olympic legacy with three gold medals and three bronzes.
Japan also secured their spot by defending their AVC Men’s Volleyball Asian Championship title on home soil in Fukuoka. This will be Japan’s 11th Olympic appearance and third in a row. Their history at the Games includes a bronze medal in Tokyo 1964 and silver and gold medals in the subsequent editions. Japan currently sits fifth in the FIVB World Rankings.
Cuba makes a highly anticipated return to the Olympic stage after a 12-year absence, thanks to their victory at the NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Olympic Qualifier in Moncton, Canada. This will be their eighth Olympic appearance, with their best performance being a bronze medal at Montreal 1976. Cuba is currently ranked 13th in the world.
South American Dominance and African Representation
Brazil continues its incredible streak of Olympic appearances, set to make their 17th consecutive showing at LA 2028. The three-time Olympic champions (1992, 2004, 2016) dominated the CSV Men’s Volleyball South American Championship on home soil in Rio de Janeiro, winning the tournament without dropping a single set. Brazil, ranked sixth globally, also holds three silver medals in their Olympic history.
Tunisia emerged victorious at the CAVB Men’s Volleyball African Nations Championship, held in Tunis, to claim Africa’s sole berth in this qualification phase. This marks Tunisia’s eighth Olympic appearance in men’s volleyball. They are currently the 30th-ranked team in the world.
European Champions Claim Top Spot
The world’s number one ranked team, Poland, successfully defended their CEV Men’s Volleyball European Championship title, earning their ticket to LA 2028. Poland, the silver medalists at Paris 2024, will be making their 12th Olympic appearance overall and seventh consecutive. Their Olympic history includes a gold medal from Montreal 1976, making their Paris 2024 silver their second Olympic podium finish.
These six teams have secured their places early, but the journey to the LA 2028 Olympics is far from over for other nations. The next three Olympic tickets will be awarded to the top three teams at the 2027 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup (among those not yet qualified), with the final three spots being determined by the FIVB World Ranking at the conclusion of the 2028 Volleyball Nations League Preliminary Phase.
