Allianz Milano suffered a dramatic collapse, squandering a two-set lead to fall in a five-set thriller against Rana Verona. The home side completed a stunning comeback after a lengthy interruption, ultimately winning the tie-break 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13.
Milano Dominates Early Sets Before Interruption
Allianz Milano showcased near-perfect volleyball for the opening two sets, demonstrating both quality and character. They established early leads with strong performances from players like Dermaux and Rotty, putting Verona’s defense under significant pressure.
In the first set, Milano raced to a 0-3 lead with a double block and an ace from Dermaux. Extended rallies saw Otsuka and Rotty contribute, while Simon and Bartolucci were effective at the net. Milano extended their lead to 8-13, and despite Verona’s attempts to close the gap, Milano maintained control, ultimately winning the set 25-23 after a Keita service error.
The second set saw a similar pattern. Milano took an early lead, and despite Verona fighting back to tie the score at 11-11, Milano regained momentum. Dermaux was instrumental, helping Milano build a 16-21 advantage. Although Verona managed to save two set points, Milano secured the set 25-22, taking a commanding two-set lead and their first point of the match.
Verona Mounts Comeback After Electronic Scoreboard Issues
The momentum dramatically shifted following an extended interruption between the second and third sets due to issues with the electronic scoreboard. This break seemed to disrupt Milano’s rhythm, allowing Rana Verona to regroup and find their footing.
The third set saw a change in Verona’s lineup, with Sani entering for Mozic. Verona quickly established a lead, with Keita being a key offensive weapon. Despite Milano’s efforts to stay close, Verona maintained control, with Buchegger sealing a crucial ace to go up 19-15. Verona eventually took the set 25-19, reigniting their comeback hopes.
Verona continued their surge into the fourth set. Although the set remained close, Verona’s renewed energy and offensive pressure, spearheaded by Keita, proved too much for Milano. They managed to force a deciding tie-break, winning the fourth set 25-22.
Tie-Break Battle Decided by Keita’s Heroics
The fifth set was a tense, back-and-forth affair, played on a knife’s edge. Both teams traded points, showcasing their determination. However, it was once again Yuryanquis Keita who made the decisive difference for Rana Verona.
Keita delivered an outstanding performance throughout the match, finishing with an impressive 30 points and earning the MVP award. His offensive prowess, particularly in the crucial moments of the tie-break, was instrumental in Verona’s ability to complete the comeback. Verona ultimately clinched the tie-break 15-13, securing a hard-fought victory.
For Allianz Milano, the result is a tough pill to swallow, having been in such a dominant position. They managed to secure one point from the match, but the loss highlights the importance of maintaining focus and momentum, especially after significant game interruptions.
