Defending champions Poland have secured their spot in the men’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) semifinals, overcoming a resilient Ukraine in a hard-fought quarterfinal match. The Polish squad will now face Slovenia in the next stage of the competition.
Poland Edges Ukraine in Four-Set Thriller
Poland, the current VNL titleholders, faced a stern test from Ukraine, ultimately prevailing 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17). This victory marks Poland’s seventh consecutive semifinal appearance in the eight-year history of the VNL. Ukraine, despite the loss, can hold their heads high after reaching the Finals for the first time and demonstrating impressive performance against the world’s top-ranked team.
Key Performances Fuel Poland’s Victory
Bartlomiej Boladz was the standout performer for Poland, leading all scorers with an impressive 24 points. His offensive prowess, including 19 successful spikes at a 66% success rate, combined with crucial blocking efforts, was instrumental in securing the win. Star outside hitter Wilfredo Leon also contributed significantly, adding 16 points to the scoreboard, including two aces.
The match saw Poland control the first set, building a substantial lead before closing it out at 25-22. Ukraine responded strongly in the second set, pushing Poland to their limits and leveling the match with a 25-22 win. Poland regained momentum in the third set, with Boladz and Leon exchanging powerful blows, eventually taking it 25-20.
The fourth set saw Poland assert their dominance, racing to an early lead and maintaining control. Boladz’s exceptional blocking, with five stuffs in the match, was a highlight as Poland closed out the set 25-17 to clinch the victory.
Ukraine’s Historic Run and Semifinal Matchups
Ukraine showcased their growth and determination throughout the tournament, reaching the VNL Finals for the first time. Vasyl Tupchii led Ukraine’s efforts with 13 points, matched by Dmytro Yanchuk. Captain Yurii Semeniuk also put in a strong performance with 10 points, including three blocks.
“Tough game! Ukraine is a good team. But most important is the win,” commented Boladz post-match. “I hope the next game will be better, because I think our level was not like always. This season, Ukraine showed that they can play very well and won against some top teams.”
Yurii Semeniuk expressed pride in his team’s performance: “It was a difficult game today, but I am so happy for my team. We played, we tried, we did… and I think we showed everything that we have today. I love this team!”
Poland is set to face Slovenia in the semifinals on Saturday at 15:00 local time. The other semifinal will feature Japan against the United States later that evening.
