The EuroVolley 2026 Men knockout stage is heating up as co-hosts Finland prepare to face Italy in a thrilling quarterfinal clash in Torino.
Finland’s Epic Comeback Secures Quarterfinal Berth
Finland punched their ticket to the quarterfinals after an absolutely gripping five-set thriller against Greece. The Marttila brothers and Joonas Jokela were instrumental in their dramatic victory, showcasing incredible resilience.
The match, which kicked off the playoff phase, saw Finland, who finished second in Pool C, battle it out against Greece, third in Pool A. For Finland, this was a chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2013, while Greece aimed for their best EuroVolley result since 1987.
Greece started strong, establishing an early lead thanks to Angelos Markou’s powerful serving and attacking. They maintained a comfortable advantage for much of the first set, eventually taking it 25-22. However, Finland, spurred on by the Marttila twins and Jokela, began to claw their way back into the contest.
The Marttila Brothers Lead the Charge
Finland’s resurgence was particularly evident in the second set. They established an early lead, with their net play proving exceptionally effective. Six blocks in the set stifled Greece’s offense, allowing Finland to comfortably level the match at 25-16, with Nooa Marttila leading the scoring.
The third set saw another strong start from Greece, with Markou again making his mark. Despite Finland’s efforts to close the gap, Greece managed to regain control and secure the set 25-22, putting them just one set away from a historic quarterfinal appearance. Alexandros Raptis was a key offensive force for Greece in this set.
Facing elimination, Finland dug deep in the fourth set. The teams exchanged blows in a tense battle, but crucial spikes from Luka Marttila and Joonas Jokela gave Finland a slight edge. Although Greece fought back to level the score, two costly errors from Markou in the closing stages allowed Finland to snatch the set 25-23, forcing a deciding fifth set.
