Romania and France delivered dominant performances, securing swift straight-set victories to punch their tickets to the CEV EuroVolley quarterfinals.
Romania’s Dominance Over Ukraine
Romania showcased their strength by sweeping Ukraine, marking their second consecutive appearance in the last eight of the prestigious tournament. The Romanian squad displayed impressive offensive prowess and mental fortitude, particularly in a nail-biting third set.
Alexandru Rață was a standout performer for Romania, leading the charge with 16 points and an impressive 55% attacking efficiency. Cristian-Daniel Chițigoi also made crucial contributions, especially from the service line, disrupting Ukraine’s rhythm. Despite a spirited effort from Ukraine, especially in the dramatic third set that stretched to 30-28, Romania held firm to secure the crucial win.
Ukraine’s downfall was largely attributed to 28 costly team errors, while Romania held a distinct advantage in aces with a 7-4 lead. Oleh Plotnytskyi was Ukraine’s top scorer with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Romanian momentum.
France’s Convincing Victory Against Portugal
France also cruised into the quarterfinals with a commanding straight-sets victory over Portugal. The French team demonstrated exceptional attacking efficiency, hitting at 57% across the match.
Trévor Clévenot and Mathis Henno were instrumental in France’s success, each contributing 12 points. Under the guidance of coach Andrea Giani, the French side maintained control throughout the match, fending off several comeback attempts from the Portuguese squad.
For Portugal, Alexandre Ferreira and Lourenço Martins put up a fight, scoring 13 points each. However, their efforts were ultimately undermined by 28 team errors, mirroring Ukraine’s struggles and preventing them from challenging France more effectively.
